How to test Shopify gift-box order confirmation emails

Check whether a gift-box confirmation preserves each selection, component quantity and standalone item. Review Shopify templates and test the actual received message.

By tnova teamGuides7 min readUpdated

Quick answer: Compare a gift-box order confirmation email with the actual Shopify order, checking the box grouping, chosen variants, component quantities and amounts. Previewing the template is a first check; it does not prove that a real mix-and-match selection renders correctly. Older customized Shopify notification templates can need bundle-specific updates, and a third-party email provider needs a separate check.

This guide focuses on the confirmation the buyer receives after an authorized test purchase. For payment, inventory and original-order integrity, use the gift-box test-order audit. tnova is preparing for public installation; the steps below do not imply that public installation or unrestricted live purchasing is available.

Identify which system produces the confirmation

Record whether the message comes from Shopify's customer notification template or another email service, which template is active, and whether it has custom code. Changing the storefront theme is not evidence that an email template changed too.

For Shopify notifications, start at Settings → Notifications → Customer notifications → Order confirmation. Shopify's bundle email update guide says default templates were updated to nest bundle components under their parent. Templates customized before December 6, 2024 did not automatically receive that update.

Do not infer compatibility solely from the date. Inspect the current message. A newer customization can also omit useful information. tnova reads Shopify's order groups for reconciliation; it does not edit the store's notification templates or verify inbox delivery.

Use a short record:

FieldWhat to record
Message producerShopify customer notification or named third-party service
TemplateOrder confirmation; default or customized
Existing customizationBranding, wording, item loops or other changes to preserve
Test referenceTest order, date and exact email client used
DecisionPassed, failed or not yet observed

Keep customer contact details and private order-status links out of a shared troubleshooting record.

Preview the template before placing a test order

If you will change code, save the complete current template outside the editor first. Shopify warns that reverting a customized template to its default removes those customizations. Do not use a reset as an exploratory click.

Follow Shopify's notification customization instructions: use Preview to inspect unsaved changes and Send test email to view a test in an inbox. Shopify sends that template test to the account used to sign in to the admin. Review it before saving a proposed change.

Check readable product names, visible quantities, the box heading and the total area. On a phone, long variant names should not obscure quantities or amounts. Also read the message with images unavailable: the buyer should not need a product thumbnail to discover what they ordered.

Treat the preview and template test as layout checks. Unless their data actually represents your selection, they cannot establish that two different selections of the same parent product stay distinct. Use an actual authorized test order for that question.

Use an order that exposes lost selection details

Use the exact supported theme/cart setup and Shopify's authorized test-order process. Use a test inbox you control where permitted by the test environment. Do not send exploratory notifications to a customer or place a real paid order merely to check formatting.

Here is a fictional six-item test design. A and B are labels for your test notes, not a promise that those labels appear in the email. The two selections use the same gift-box parent product.

Order groupSelection per boxNumber of boxesComponent units in this group
ABlue notebook × 2, black pencil pack × 2, brass clip pack × 22Blue notebook × 4, pencil pack × 4, clip pack × 4
BGreen notebook × 2, black pencil pack × 2, brass clip pack × 21Green notebook × 2, pencil pack × 2, clip pack × 2
Standalone purchaseBlue notebook × 1 outside either boxNot a boxBlue notebook × 1

The order has three boxes containing 18 component units, plus one standalone notebook. Across the whole order that means five blue notebooks, two green notebooks, six pencil packs and six clip packs. Each pack remains one purchased unit of its variant.

Start with a simpler one-box baseline if needed, then run the multi-group case when that purchase path is authorized and testable. Record cases you cannot complete as unverified. A passing one-box email does not establish the multi-group result.

Compare the received email with the actual order

Open the completed order in Shopify and the received confirmation side by side. In tnova's Data and orders, use Read and reconcile order for a fresh view of the configuration versions, box quantities, component variant IDs and purchased quantities. A successful integrity check helps establish the order structure; it does not establish what the email displayed or whether it arrived.

Check the buyer's questions in this order:

  1. Which boxes did I buy? The different selections must remain understandable even when their parent titles are identical. A single grand total of all components loses that relationship.
  2. What goes inside each selection? Compare variant details and quantities with the order. For group A, the email must represent two copies and their actual components without leaving the reader to guess whether a displayed quantity is per box or for both.
  3. What did I buy separately? The standalone blue notebook must remain outside the box contents. A repeated variant name does not make it another bundle component.
  4. What was charged? Compare the email's merchandise, discounts, shipping, tax and final amount with Shopify's recorded amounts and currency. Do not add a displayed parent amount to its component allocations as if both were separate charges.

Shopify's grouped-view developer documentation explains the distinction between bundle groups and standalone lines for email providers. If a provider needs a technical investigation, give it the affected group reference and observed discrepancy. Group identity matters; grouping everything by product title can combine different selections incorrectly.

Fix the template that failed and keep the result specific

If the Shopify order is correct but the email is flat, missing components or duplicating amounts, investigate the active notification template. Shopify provides instructions for updating customized templates. Have someone comfortable with Liquid, HTML and CSS apply the appropriate change while preserving the backup. Changing the gift-box assortment cannot repair an email rendering error on an existing order.

For a third-party sender, confirm its own bundle rendering with the provider and rerun the same test. Shopify's default-template behavior does not certify that integration. If the message never arrives, investigate notification delivery separately from component grouping; a missing inbox message alone does not show that the order was wrong.

Save the tested template version, order reference, client/device, expected and observed quantities, amount comparison and next action. Retest an ordinary non-bundle order after a shared template change. Keep a newly received confirmation as evidence; an older email does not change when you save a template.

Limit the approval to the message and cases actually observed. Shopify's notification-type table lists grouped order confirmations and flat component displays for several return notifications. One confirmation check does not approve every later email, fulfillment document or return screen. Use the separate packing handoff and component-refund guide for those tasks.

Current tnova store verification covers Dawn 16.0.0, cart type Page, the default market/currency and one shared component location. Email-provider compatibility remains a separate store-specific check. If the order structure itself is unexpected, preserve the test reference and prepare a focused support report before changing more systems.

About this guide: Prepared with AI assistance and checked against tnova's read-only order reconciliation and the current official Shopify sources linked here on October 20, 2026. The order is a fictional test design; no email was sent, template changed or merchant integration certified for this article.
